Here’s what architects actually do
We're trained to see the whole picture before anything gets built. Not just what looks good — but what works. Whether that floor plan you love on Pinterest will actually function for your life. Whether moving that wall costs a fraction or a fortune. Whether what you think you want is actually what you want.
Most people never get that input. They piece it together from contractors, Instagram, and a lot of expensive guesswork.
Think of it like planning a big dinner party. The head chef designs the whole meal — every dish, how they work together, the timing, the full experience. The contractor is the waitstaff: skilled, essential, executing the plan. The decorator picks the plates. The structural engineer makes sure the recipes are physically possible.
You don't always need a head chef. But when you're building something expensive and permanent that you'll live inside for years — you want someone who's thought about the whole meal.
I work as your guest head chef. We design the game plan together, and I hand the kitchen back to you.

I'm Stefanie Mustian -
I’m a licensed architect based in Williamsburg, Virginia — where I grew up, left, practiced in New York and Texas for years, and eventually came back.
I care about how spaces actually work. Flow, light, function — the things that make a house feel right or quietly wrong. My superpower is floor plans. I also have a master's degree in classical architecture, which means I find cornice proportions genuinely exciting. I realize that's specific.
Board + Batten is my version of what this profession could be: accessible, honest, and useful for the way people actually build.
